Asymptotic freedom holds that "the closer quarks are to each other, the less the strong interaction (or color charge) between them; when quarks are in extreme proximity, the nuclear force between them is so weak that they behave almost as free particles" (Wikipedia). This unusual characteristic allows quarks to be bound arbitrarily close together without the attractive force becoming too large. "Asymptotic freedom means that in very high energy reactions and thus at very short distances the interaction between quarks and gluons becomes very weak.
