Systema Naturae, per Regna Tria Naturae per regna tria naturae, secundum classes, ordines, genera, species, cvm characteribus, et differentiis, Tomus III, 1770 [THE STARTING POINT OF MODERN SYSTEMATIC BOTANY (PMM)]

Vindobonae [Vienna]: Typis Ioannis Thomae, 1770. 1770 EDITION OF LINNEAUS’S, SYSTEMA NATURAE, “ONE OF THE MOST FUNDAMENTAL WORKS IN THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE” (Christie’s Valuable Printed Books and Manuscripts 14 November 2007, Sale 7471). This work represents "the inauguration of the classification of plants and animals" (Grolier/Horblit) which "has had few parallels in the history of science" (Dictionary of Science and Biography, VIII, 377).

The full title translates as “System of nature through the three kingdoms of nature, according to classes, orders, genera and species, with characters, differences, synonyms, places". In 1735, Linneaus compiled this work "as a first outline of what in its further development became the foundation of botanical and zoological classification systems" (Printing and the Mind of Man). Linneaus’s rough first outline of this work was published in 1735, but over the course of forty years he continued to refine it based upon his updated knowledge and research. Offered here is volume III of four volumes, each of which stands alone. This copy was published in 1770. The final version of this first scientific classification of plants and animals: class, order, genus, species that was reworked by his hand was published in 1758. This is a reprint, a 1770 reprint, of that final version.

Carl von Linne (1707-1778), better known as Linnaeus, brought order out of chaos in the natural sciences of the 18th century by developing a system of scientific nomenclature that quickly became — and still remains — the international standard. To this day, “many plants and animals are still named to this day with reference ‘Linnaeus’, ‘Linn,’ or ‘L’ attached” (ibid). Item #1478
