London: Printed for private circulation by J.B. Nichols and sons, 1864. 1st Edition. Captain William Henry Smyth was a British Admiral, hydrographer, and astronomer. In Bedford, England, Smyth built the Hartwell observatory; there he carried out astronomical observations for many years. In 1844, he published his Cycle of Celestial Objects for Use of Naval, Military, and Private Astronomers, most commonly referred to as the Bedford catalogue -- a now famous work for which Smyth was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Astronomical Society.
