An Uncommon Browning Projection Prism Box, 4th quarter 19th c, used for the demonstration of the spectrum in a classroom or lecture hall. The base is signed, “John Browning, 6 Strand London”.
The darkened cylindrical box is mounted on a bright brass adjustable pillar with platform/stand 20 , tall (note spotted lacquer). The box is fit with two adjustable sliding-door slits. The box may be removed for placement of various types of prisms and optical cells.
